Abstract: Calcium has been proved to play a key role in the growth and developme nt of fruit. Many physiological disorders and diseases caused by postharvest pathogens are related to calcium deficiency in the tissue of fruit. Calcium treatment in combination with other methods such as controlled atmosphere (CA), heating, and biological control has shown a marked efficacy in reducing postharvest losses. This review presents the mechanism of calcium on controlling postharvest diseases of fruit, methods of calcium treatment, factors affecting calcium uptake, as well as combination of calcium with other treatments. In addition, major problems that may occur in calcium treatment and viable methods to solve them are also discussed.
