Abstract: To study whether a correlation exists between late-flowering phenotype and abiotic stress tolerance, seven Arabidopsis late-flowering mutants with the same genetic background of Wassilewskija To study whether a correlation exists between late-flowering phenotype and abiotic stress tolerance, seven Arabidopsis late-flowering mutants with the same genetic background of Wassilewskija ecotype were tested for tolerance to drought, salt, and oxidative stress. These mutants displayed significantly higher tolerance to the stresses tested than the wildtype(WT). In addition, the rate of water loss from detached leaves and superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity were also compared between the WT and the mutants. It was found that the mutants showed a much better water conservation and higher superoxide dismutase activity than the WT. A positive correlation was found between SOD activity and abiotic stress tolerance, suggesting that oxidative stress tolerance plays an important role in abiotic stress tolerance.
