By using a suitable sample preparation, free and bound phytoestrogens (daidzein, equol, genistein, formononetin, coumestrol and biochanin A) can be isolated from extracts of fresh plant material and subsequently quantified by HPLC at different wave lengths. Chromatographic peaks assigned to phytoestrogens were identified by retention time and by comparison to the addi-tion of standards.

Five new iridoidal glycosides, gentioumosides A-E were isolated from the whole herb of Gentiana urnula. Their structures were elucidated mainly by spectral methods. Among which gentioumosides A-C are bis-iridoidal glycosides while gentioumosides D and E are loganin type ones. It is noted that all the glycosides possess a 2,3-dihydroxy benxoyl unit or its derivative in the molecule.

A new acyi sugar along with four know iridoidal and phenyl propanoid glycosides, harpagoside, harpagide, 0-methyl catalpol and angoroside C, were isolated from the roots of Scrophularia ningpoensis Hemsl., a famous traditional Chinese medicine known as "Xuan-Shem". By means of chemical and spectral evidence its structure was elucidated as 4-0-(p-methoxycinnamoyl)-α-L-rhamnopyranose.

Two steroidal saponins were isolated from the rhizome of Aspidistra elatior. On the basis of detailed chemical and spectrascopic evidence, their structures were elucidated to be diosgenin-3-0-[β-D-glucopyranosyl(l-2)-[β-D-xylopyranosyl(l-3)]-β-D-glucopyrano-syl(1-4)-β-D-galactopyranoside(aspidistrin)and neobotogenin-3-0-[β-D-glucopyranosyl(l - 2)]-[β-D-xylopyranosyl(l- 3)]-β-D-glucopyranosyl(l- 4)-β-D-galactopyranoside respectively. The latter is new steroidal saponin and named a neoaspidistrin.

After examining the anatomical characters of the rhizomes of 27 species belonging to 5 genera of Chinese Arthrostylidiae, the authors discorved that the rhizomes, especialy the culm necks, have some taxonomic importance in the tribe. According to the characters of rhizomes to-gether with those of the other organs, the authors descussed the interrelation among the 5 genera and supported to keep these genera separate.

Change of water physiology of potted plants Cymbidium sinense (Andr.) Willd. grown in different soil moisture condition were studied. Different age of leaf had different response to drought, 1-year-old leaf was sensitive than 2-year-old leaf. Among several physiological parameters, such as leaf water content, leaf water potential, chlorophyll content, transpiratory rate and stomatal resistance etc., last two parameters were the most sensitive to drought.

This article describes the anatomical features of the embryos of 13 species of bamboo fruits, discusses the significance of these features in systematical classification as well as the status of each species in the classification system. As experiments proved, the embryonic types of the bamboo fruits are varied and complicated, which evinces the limitation of the previous definition of theembeyo types of the Bambusoideae as F+PP type.

In present paper, pollen morphology of seven species of the genus Tongoloa from China was studied. They are concentrated in the Hengduan Mountains and some species extend to nearby area. The pollen grains were examined under LM and SEM. The result shows: They are rhomboidal types except T. dunnii (Boissieu) H. Wolffand T. silaifolia (Boissieu) H. Wolff which are rectangular type. All the pollen grains are not original or typical rhomboidal types. T. gracilis H. Wolff, T. elata H. Wolff are presented various shapes i.e. subrhomboidal. subelliptical and subrectangular. This is a differential rhomboidal type. So we may consider that the evolutionary trends of pollen types were from rhomboidal type to rectangular type in the genus Tongoloa H. Wolff. In our earlier paper we touched similar pollen morphology in the genus Physospermopsis H. Wolff. The pollen information suggest that Tongoloa H. Wolff may be closely related to the genus Physospermopsis.

The total area of the mountain is about 250 km2. Its nature forest occur at about 1200 m to 1890 m elevation. The dominant elements in the forest are Fagus, Quercus, Cyclobalanopsis, Carpinus, Betula, Sassafras, Tilia, Acer, Padus, Davidia, Rhododendron, Sinanrundinaria etc. On the top of the mountains, Fagus lucida almost form pure forest.
