The roots of Tupislra aurantiaca Wall et .Backer is a folk medicine for treating stomachache in Yunnan. Six spirostane sapogenins (A-F) were obtained from crude sapogenin by column chromafography. Sapogcnin A and D were identificd as 3-epiruscogcnin (1 ) and 3-cpi-neoruscogenin (2 ) respectively. Sapogenin C (tupisgenin) and D (aurantigenin) are new compounds, the struc- tures of them have been suggested as (20s, 22s, 25s) -22, 25-epoxy-5-furosten- lβ, 3α, 26-triol (3 ) and (25s)-spirost-5-en-1β, 3α, 25-triol (4 ) respect- ively, hased on the analysis of IR, MS, 1H NMR and l3C NMR spectra.

The distributions of many plant taxa in China at the present day indicate centres of floristic importance which may be ancient, and have cvolutionary significance, or which may be only their latest locations in a Cenozoic history of migrations. This paper summarizes the present and Cenozoic distributions in China of the following taxa: Nitraria, Ephedra, Carya, Liquidamber, Pterocarya, Detulaceae. It is concluded that the centres of importance of the named genera are different now from what they were at some time in the Cenozoic past; each has accomplished major migrations and suffered significant extinctions during that period. The history of the Betulaceae is less clear but in principlc soluble.

This paper presents thc chemical constituents of the essential oil of Cyatho- cline purpurea (Buch.-Ham.) O.Ktze., which is a folk drug and widely used as antiphlogistic, styptic, insecticide, diuretic etc. in China. Twenty two compounds were qualitatively and quentitatively analysed from this essential oil on the basis of GC/MS/DS, showed in Table (1 ). Two of them were important components: thymohydroquinone dimethyl ether (I ) (ca. 70%), and thymyl iso-butyrate (II) (ca. 19%), which were separated by chromotography and determined by the data of IR, PMR, CMR and MS. The thymyl iso-butyrate was first isolated from plant.

Hengduanshan is referred to the region situated in west Sichuan and north -west Yunnan, where mountains arrange from north to south. This region is of a special arranging pattern of mountains in China, and the bioclimate is also unique. In this paper, we are trying to take Jinsha Jiang (river) that near 28' 15′N as an exampl to explain the rules of division and distribution of the vertical vegetation zone in this region.

The genus Acmena DC., belonging to the family Myrtaceae, was founded by A. P. de Candolle in 1828, which includs 11 to 12 species ranging from Asia mainland throughout Malaysia to the Solomon Islands and Australia, and one of them extends to South China.Since the time of A. P. de Candolle (1828), an argument concerned in the classification of Acmena has been going on. Some worker5 reduced it to the genus Syzygium, and some retained it to Eugenia. However, there are some workers who reinstated Acmena as a separate genus, for example Merrill et Perry, Kausel, and some Chinese taxononlists such as Hu Hsen-hsu, How Foon--chew and Chang Hung-ta. But Airy Shaw and others insisted on an op- posite opinion and reduced Acmena to thc genus Syzygium until 1973.
