Abstract: There are nearly 400 fern species in Hainan Island. The pteridoflora is richer in the southwest and poorer in thenortheast in this Island. A line from Lingao, Qiongzhong, to Wanning is the boundary of the richer and the poorer regions. Soil terrain and geology′s co-action form this line. The foristic elements are complex, and the majority are closely related to foreign pteridofloras. Malayan, Indian, Indochinese and East Asian play important roles in fern flora of Hainan Island. It may be a modern centre of differentiation for pteridophytes. Various natural environments accelerate local ferns′evolution.
